Biografie
Richard Warren Schickel war ein US-amerikanischer Filmhistoriker, Journalist, Autor, Dokumentarfilmer sowie Film- und Literaturkritiker. Von 1965 bis 2010 war er Filmkritiker bei der Zeitschrift „Time“ und schrieb außerdem für „Life“ und die „Los Angeles Times Book Review“. Seine letzten Beiträge zum Thema Film erschienen bei „Truthdig“. Er wurde in „For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism“ (2009) interviewt. In diesem Dokumentarfilm spricht er über die frühen Filmkritiker Frank E. Woods, Robert E. Sherwood und Otis Ferguson und erzählt, wie er, Pauline Kael und Andrew Sarris in den 1960er Jahren die moralisierende Kritik des älteren Bosley Crowther von der „New York Times“ zurückwiesen, der gegen gewalttätige Filme wie „Bonnie and Clyde“ (1967) gewettert hatte. Neben Filmen beschäftigte sich Schickel auch mit der Kritik und Dokumentation von Comics, insbesondere von „Peanuts“.
