She was born in London, England to an American mother and Russian father, and was raised in Washington, D.C., and Cairo, Egypt. She writes and directs with her husband, Ahmed T. Ragheb. Their films emphasize identity, feminism, cultural dislocation and domestic relationships, and are noted for their use of voiceover and mixed media.
