Biografie
Johnnie To Kei-Fung ist ein Filmregisseur und Produzent aus Hongkong. In seiner Heimat Hongkong beliebt, hat To auch im Ausland große Anerkennung gefunden. To ist äußerst produktiv und hat Filme verschiedener Genres gedreht. Im Westen ist er jedoch vor allem für seine Action- und Kriminalfilme bekannt, die ihm den Respekt der Kritiker und eine Kult-Anhängerschaft eingebracht haben. Seine Filme, die oft in Zusammenarbeit mit derselben Gruppe von Schauspielern, Drehbuchautoren und Kameraleuten entstanden, beschäftigen sich häufig mit Themen wie Freundschaft, Schicksal und dem sich verändernden Gesicht der Hongkonger Gesellschaft. To wird manchmal als „vielschichtig und chamäleonisch“ beschrieben, da er die Tonalität und das Genre zwischen Filmen wechseln kann. Dennoch gilt To als ein Film mit einem konsistenten Stil, der eine Mischung aus gedämpftem Realismus und sozialer Beobachtung mit stark stilisierten visuellen und schauspielerischen Elementen beinhaltet. Er leitet zusammen mit seinem häufigen Co-Regisseur Wai Ka-Fai die in Hongkong ansässige Produktionsfirma Milkyway Image.
