Biografie
Guillermo del Toro Gómez (spanisch: [ɡiˈʝeɾmo ðelˈtoɾo]; * 9. Oktober 1964) ist ein mexikanischer Filmemacher, Autor und Künstler. Sein Werk ist geprägt von einer starken Verbindung zu Märchen, Gothic und Horror. Oftmals verschmilzt er diese Genres, um dem Grotesken visuelle oder poetische Schönheit zu verleihen. Monster faszinieren ihn seit jeher; er betrachtet sie als Symbole großer Macht. Bekannt ist er als Pionier der Dark Fantasy im Film und für die Verwendung von Insekten- und religiösen Motiven, die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Katholizismus, die Feier der Unvollkommenheit, Unterweltmotive, praktische Spezialeffekte und die dominante bernsteinfarbene Beleuchtung. ... Im Laufe seiner Karriere wechselte del Toro zwischen spanischsprachigen Filmen – wie Cronos (1993), Das Rückgrat des Teufels (2001) und Pans Labyrinth (2006) – und englischsprachigen Filmen, darunter Mimic (1997), Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) und dessen Fortsetzung Hellboy II: Die Goldene Armee (2008), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015), Shape of Water – Das Geheimnis des Wassers (2017), Nightmare Alley (2021) und Pinocchio (2022). Als Produzent und Drehbuchautor wirkte er an Filmen wie „Das Waisenhaus“ (2007), „Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark“ (2010), der „Hobbit“-Filmreihe (2012–2014), „Mama“ (2013), „Das Buch des Lebens“ (2014), „Pacific Rim: Uprising“ (2018), „Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark“ (2019) und „Hexen hexen“ (2020) mit. 2022 schuf er die Netflix-Anthologie-Horrorserie „Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities“, eine Sammlung klassischer Horrorgeschichten. Gemeinsam mit Chuck Hogan verfasste er die Romantrilogie „The Strain“ (2009–2011), die später als Comicreihe (2011–2015) und als Realfilm-Fernsehserie (2014–2017) adaptiert wurde. Mit DreamWorks Animation und Netflix schuf er das Animations-Franchise „Tales of Arcadia“, zu dem die Serien „Trollhunters“ (2016–2018), „3Below“ (2018–2019) und „Wizards“ (2020) sowie der Kinofilm „Trollhunters: Aufstieg der Titanen“ (2021) gehören. Del Toro ist eng mit seinen mexikanischen Filmkollegen Alfonso Cuarón und Alejandro G. Iñárritu befreundet; gemeinsam bilden sie die „Drei Amigos des mexikanischen Kinos“. Er wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter drei Oscars, drei BAFTA Awards, zwei Golden Globes, ein Daytime Emmy Award und ein Goldener Löwe. 2018 zählte ihn das Time Magazine zu den 100 einflussreichsten Menschen der Welt, und 2019 erhielt er einen Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame.
