Biographie
Née Alice Guy (1er juillet 1873 - 24 mars 1968) est généralement considérée comme la première femme réalisatrice au monde. Née en France, Alice Guy est entrée dans le monde du cinéma en tant que secrétaire chez Gaumont-Paris en 1896. L'année suivante, Gaumont passe de la fabrication d'appareils photo à la production de films, et Alice Guy devient l'un de ses premiers réalisateurs. Elle impressionne tellement la société par le rendement (elle produit en moyenne deux films de deux bobines par semaine) et la qualité de ses productions qu'en 1905, elle est nommée directrice de production de la société et supervise les autres réalisateurs. En 1907, elle épouse Herbert Blaché, un Anglais qui dirige les bureaux britannique et allemand de la société. Le couple se rend bientôt aux États-Unis pour y mettre en place les activités de la société. En 1910, elle crée sa propre société de production à New York et construit un studio à Fort Lee, dans le New Jersey. Après une période de succès critique et financier, la fortune de sa société décline et elle finit par fermer le studio. Bien qu'elle ait trouvé du travail comme réalisatrice pour plusieurs grands studios hollywoodiens, elle retourne en France en 1922 après son divorce avec Blaché. Elle n'a jamais été en mesure d'y trouver un emploi de réalisatrice et n'a plus jamais tourné de film. En 1964, elle retourne aux États-Unis et vit avec ses filles à Mahwah, dans le New Jersey, non loin de l'endroit où se trouvaient ses premiers studios, où elle meurt en 1968.
