Biographie
David Llewelyn Wark Griffith était un réalisateur américain pionnier. Il est surtout connu en tant que réalisateur du film controversé et révolutionnaire de 1915 La naissance d'une nation et du film Intolerance (1916). Le film de Griffith, The Birth of a Nation, a fait un usage pionnier de techniques avancées de caméra et de narration, et son immense popularité a ouvert la voie à la domination du long métrage. Il s'est également avéré extrêmement controversé à l'époque et depuis pour sa représentation négative des Noirs américains et de leurs partisans, et sa représentation positive de l'esclavage et du Ku Klux Klan. Griffith a répondu à ses critiques avec son prochain film, Intolerance, destiné à montrer les dangers de la pensée et du comportement préjudiciables. Le film n'a pas été le succès financier que son prédécesseur avait été, mais a été chaleureusement accueilli par la critique. Plusieurs de ses films ultérieurs ont également été couronnés de succès, mais les coûts élevés de production, de promotion et de tournée ont souvent fait de ses entreprises des échecs commerciaux. Malgré tout, il est généralement considéré comme l'une des figures les plus importantes du cinéma des débuts.
